How Much Does a Voiceover Cost in Malaysia?

voiceover.my Guides title card reading How Much Does a Voiceover Cost in Malaysia, with an orange sound-wave graphic

Hear it before you read on

Listen to real clips, then see the transcript, voice and request behind each one.

Short answer: there is no single price. A voiceover costs more when the script is longer, the audio is used in more places for longer, you need more revisions, or you need it fast. AI voices cost very little to generate, often a few sen per minute of audio, but your time and the licence still matter. For a human voice actor, get written quotes on the same brief.

We run a demo catalogue of Malay and English AI voices, so we are not neutral. This guide explains what drives the price, shows the AI numbers we could check on official pricing pages, and is honest about the numbers we could not find.

What you are actually paying for

When you pay for a voiceover, you are rarely paying only for someone reading words aloud. You are paying for a recording, the right to use it, and the work around it.

Table 1. What changes the price of a voiceover
Factor Why it changes the price What to tell the provider
Length More words take more recording, editing and checking Word count or expected duration
Usage rights Wider or longer use is worth more to you Platforms, territory and how long it runs
Revisions Every re-record or change costs time How many rounds you expect
Language and accent Bilingual or accent-specific work narrows the choice Malay, English or both; the audience
Turnaround Rush jobs push other work aside Your real deadline
Studio or AI A studio session costs more than generating audio Whether a draft or a final read

General guide by voiceover.my, 3 November 2026. It describes how prices are usually built, not a survey of Malaysian rates.

The six things that change the price

1. Length of the script

A 15-second Instagram hook and a 30-minute training course are very different jobs. Longer scripts mean more recording time, more editing and more checking for mistakes. Some providers price by finished minute, others by word count or by session.

Tip: count your words and time a read-through out loud before asking for a quote. It gives every provider the same starting point.

2. Usage rights

This is often the biggest factor and the one people forget. A voice used only on your own social media is a different deal from a voice on national TV, radio, in-store screens or a phone menu used for years. Ask for usage rights in writing: where the audio can be used, in which countries, and for how long.

3. Revisions

Changing “RM25” to “RM30” after recording can mean a new session. Ask how many revision rounds are included and what an extra one costs. With AI, a change is a text edit and a few seconds of generation, which is one of its biggest advantages.

4. Language and accent

In Malaysia, many businesses need Malay and English, sometimes in the same campaign. Finding one voice who does both well, with the accent your audience expects, can take longer. With AI, a Malay voice is not automatically a Malaysian-sounding voice, so listen before you commit.

5. Turnaround

Need it tomorrow? Rush delivery usually costs more because someone has to move other work. If you plan ahead, you have more choice and fewer surprises.

6. Studio versus AI

A human session includes the studio, the performer, direction and editing. AI text-to-speech replaces the session with a few seconds of generation, but someone still has to choose the voice, write clear text and listen carefully.

What does a human voice actor cost in Malaysia?

We are not going to print a Malaysian rate range. We looked for a reliable, current, public rate card for Malaysian voice actors and did not find one we could cite. A made-up number would mislead you.

What we can say is how to get a fair quote:

  • Send the same brief to two or three voice actors or studios.
  • Include the script, the usage, the territory, the run time and the delivery format.
  • Ask for a written quote that names the usage rights and the number of revisions.
  • Ask what happens if you need extra lines later.

If a quote seems very low, check what rights it actually includes.

What does AI text-to-speech cost?

AI providers publish their prices, so this part can be calculated. We checked the official pricing pages on 3 November 2026 and converted US dollars to ringgit at Bank Negara Malaysia’s USD selling rate for that day, RM4.085 per US$1.

  • Google Gemini text-to-speech charges per amount of audio produced. Its two current speech models work out to about US$0.009 and US$0.0135 per minute of audio until 31 December 2026, and Google lists double those prices from 1 January 2027 (Gemini API pricing).
  • ElevenLabs sells monthly plans with credits. Its Starter plan is listed at US$6 a month for 30,000 credits and includes a commercial licence (ElevenLabs pricing). Its API lists the v4 model at US$0.08 per 1,000 characters, which ElevenLabs puts at about US$0.08 per minute (ElevenLabs API pricing).
Table 2. Estimated AI generation cost in ringgit for common jobs
Job Gemini, until 31 Dec 2026 Gemini, from 1 Jan 2027 ElevenLabs API (v4)
30-second ad about RM0.02 to RM0.03 about RM0.04 to RM0.06 about RM0.16
3-minute explainer video about RM0.11 to RM0.17 about RM0.22 to RM0.33 about RM0.98
30-minute training course about RM1.10 to RM1.65 about RM2.21 to RM3.31 about RM9.80

Last verified 3 November 2026. Estimates by voiceover.my from the providers’ published rates, at BNM’s USD selling rate of RM4.085 (3 November 2026). Gemini ranges cover its lower-cost and standard speech models and include audio output only. The ElevenLabs column uses its own estimate of about US$0.08 per minute. Excludes subscriptions, retakes, editing and your time. Prices change; check the official pages before you budget.

Two things the table does not show:

  • Subscriptions are paid even if unused. On a monthly plan, unused credits still cost you money, so your real cost per minute depends on how much you generate.
  • Retakes add up. You will often generate a line two or three times before it sounds right. That is still cheap, but plan for it.

Hear the difference before you pay

Price is only half the story. The cheapest voice is not a bargain if your customers find it odd. Listen first.

Here is the same 25-second Malay weekend cafe promo read by two AI voices from two providers:

At the rates above, the Gemini version costs under 2 sen to generate and the ElevenLabs version roughly 14 sen. Both are tiny next to your time, so choose the one that suits your brand.

For longer or more practical work, try these:

As of 3 November 2026, the catalogue has 169 demo clips in Malay and English across 12 situations. Every clip shows its transcript and the request behind it, so you can see exactly what was asked for.

The hidden costs of cheap AI voice

AI generation is cheap, but the project around it is not free. Budget for:

  • Choosing a voice. Listening to several options takes longer than generating them.
  • Checking the Malay. Ask a Malaysian colleague to listen for pronunciation, loanwords and tone.
  • Retakes and edits. Small changes in wording or punctuation can change the delivery.
  • Licence and platform rules. Check the provider’s terms for commercial use, and any rules about AI audio on the platforms you advertise on.
  • Consent. Never copy a real person’s voice without their clear permission.

If the voice will carry a national campaign or an emotional brand story, a human performer you can direct may still be worth the higher fee. Many teams use AI to lock the script and timing first, then book a person for the final read.

Checklist before you ask for a quote

Have these ready, whether you hire a person or use AI:

  • The final script, with word count or expected duration
  • Language: Malay, English or both
  • Where the audio will be used (social, website, radio, TV, phone menu)
  • How long it will run and in which countries
  • How many revisions you expect
  • Your deadline
  • The file format you need (for example MP3 or WAV)
  • Two or three reference clips of the style you like

With that list, quotes become much easier to compare, and you can work out quickly whether AI is good enough for the job.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a voiceover cost in Malaysia?

It depends on the length of the script, where and how long the audio will be used, how many revisions you need, the language and how fast you need it. We could not find a reliable public Malaysian rate card for human voice actors, so ask two or three providers for written quotes. AI voices are far cheaper to generate, often a few sen per minute of audio, but you still pay for your own time.

How much does an AI voiceover cost per minute?

At the published rates we checked on 3 November 2026, Google Gemini text-to-speech works out to roughly RM0.04 to RM0.06 per minute of audio output until 31 December 2026, and about double from 1 January 2027. The ElevenLabs API lists its v4 model at US$0.08 per 1,000 characters, which ElevenLabs puts at about US$0.08 (around RM0.33) per minute. These are estimates at a BNM rate of RM4.085 per US dollar.

Why does the same script get very different quotes?

Quotes usually differ because of usage rights (social media only, or TV and radio too), how long you want to use the audio, exclusivity, the number of revisions included, studio and editing work, and how quickly you need delivery. Ask every provider to quote on the same written brief so you can compare like with like.

Is AI voice always cheaper than a human voice actor?

For the generation step, almost always. The full cost also includes writing the script, listening to several voices, retakes, checking the Malay, and any subscription you pay whether you use it or not. For a high-visibility brand campaign, a directed human performance may still be worth the higher fee.

Will AI voice prices go up?

Google has announced that its Gemini text-to-speech prices double from 1 January 2027. Other providers can change their prices or plans at any time, so check the official pricing page on the day you budget.

Can I use an AI voice in a paid advert?

Check the terms of the service and plan you use. For example, ElevenLabs lists a commercial licence on its paid Starter plan and above. Do not imitate a real person's voice without their clear consent.
